What is Colposcopy?
Colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure used to examine the vagina, vulva and cervix for disease. A colposcopy is usually recommended following an abnormal pap test. If unusual cells are discovered during a colposcopy, your doctor may take a tissue sample for further laboratory testing (biopsy).
How is Colposcopy performed?
Colposcopy is performed using a special magnifying instrument known as a colposcope. The doctor will use a metal speculum to hold open the walls of your vagina to see the cervix. The colposcope is then placed near the vulva and is used to magnify the area for close examination.
