The American Cancer Society estimates more than 39,000 women will be diagnosed with melanoma in the United States this year.

Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. Most lesions are asymmetrical and tend to have rough edges, and they can have multiple colors.

According to Mercy surgical oncologist Dr. Vadim Gushchin, director of The Melanoma & Skin Cancer Center at Mercy, researchers are actively looking for ways to decrease risks for melanoma, but at this point, there is no silver bullet. He also stressed that people with a lighter complexion aren't the only ones at risk.

"People with darker skin - Asian or African American - do develop melanoma, unfortunately, and they often develop more aggressive melanoma," Dr. Gushchin said.

It's important to pay attention to your skin by looking for new, changing or unusual growths because early detection and prevention are key.

Dr. Gushchin emphasized the importance of avoiding direct sunlight, wearing protective clothing and using sunscreen regularly. All of these things can help you avoid getting sunburned, which is especially important for children because sunburn during childhood has been linked to a higher risk of developing skin cancer.
