Healthy New Year's Resolutions

As we embark on another year, people are pondering their New Year's resolutions, such as losing weight and getting in shape.

According to Nora Gleason, CRNP, a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner with Mercy Personal Physicians at Glen Burnie, it's wise not to set the bar too high for resolutions. Instead of one big goal, she said to have some small goals that are more achievable.

For people who normally eat out, try a resolution to cook at home more. For those who want to increase exercise, gradually build on it and avoid doing too much, too fast.

"Say someone drinks soda multiple times a day. I will usually tell people, 'Instead of drinking soda every day, why don't you drink it three days a week?' Or, 'Every time you want to drink a soda, try to drink some water or a seltzer water instead,'" Gleason said.

Gleason added that sleep is also important, and that a great resolution may be trying to get a full night's rest by putting down the phone and getting to bed earlier.
