Mercy's Dr. William Raoofi Discusses Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Complex regional pain syndrome is a chronic arm or leg pain developing after injury, surgery, stroke or heart attack. The exact cause isn't well understood but may involve abnormal inflammation or nerve dysfunction.
Complex regional pain is characterized by pain that is greater than would be expected from the injury that causes it.
According to William S. Raoofi, M.D., a pain management specialist with The Center for Interventional Pain Medicine at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, treatment has many steps.
“We start with more conservative measures, such as medications, physical therapy, occupational therapy and nerve blocks that involve injection of medication that blocks the nerves that carry the pain signal to the spinal cord and to the brain,” Dr. Raoofi said.
More advanced cases can use spinal cord stimulation, Dr. Raoofi added.
